Jesus in the Old Testament

YAHWEH AND THE MESSIAH   
He is the LORD (Yahweh)

YAHWEH:
God also said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites, “The LORD, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.”

This is my name for ever,
    the name you shall call me
    from generation to generation.
(Exod. 3.15)  

He is God enthroned forever   

MESSIAH:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch . . .
And this is His name by which He will be called,
The LORD our righteousness.’ ”
(Jer 23.5-6)   

YAHWEH:
God, who is enthroned from of old,
….who does not change –
he will hear them and humble them . . .
(Ps. 55.19)    
  

He is the Lord (adonai)

MESSIAH:
Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever
;
….a sceptre of justice will be the sceptre of your kingdom.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
….therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing you with the oil of joy. (Ps. 45.5-6)

YAHWEH:
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings . . . And they were calling to one another:

‘Holy, holy, holy is
the LORD Almighty;
    the whole earth is full of his glory.’
(Isa. 6.1-3)      

MESSIAH:
The LORD says to
my lord:
‘Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.’
(Ps. 110.1)    

He is Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father

YAHWEH:
This also comes from the LORD of hosts;
    he is
wonderful in counsel,
    and excellent in wisdom. (Isa. 28.29 RSV)

.....O great and mighty God whose name is the LORD of hosts.....  (Jer. 32.18 RSV)  

You, LORD, are our Father,
     our Redeemer
from of old is your name. (Isa. 63.16)

He is the Most High     

MESSIAH:
For to us a child is born,
      to us a son is given,
      and the government will be on his shoulders.
 And he will be called
      
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
       Everlasting Father
. . .            
(Isa. 9.6)

YAHWEH:
The LORD thundered from heaven;
    the voice of
the Most High resounded.
(2 Sam. 22.14)  

He is the Mighty One     

MESSIAH:
He will invoke me, “My father,
my God and rock of my safety”,
and I shall make him my first-born,
the
Most High for kings on earth.      
(Ps. 89.26-27 JB)

YAHWEH:
‘Then all mankind will know
    that I, the LORD, am your Saviour,
    your Redeemer, the
Mighty One of Jacob.’
(Isa. 49.26)


He endures forever

MESSIAH:
You are the most excellent of men
    and your lips have been anointed with grace,
    since God has blessed you for ever.
Gird your sword upon your side, you
mighty one;
    clothe yourself with splendour and majesty.                        
(Ps. 45.2-3)

YAHWEH:
Before the mountains were born
    or you brought forth the whole world,
   
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
(Ps. 90.2)




He is coming to dwell in Zion as King

MESSIAH:
“Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose going forths are from of old,
From everlasting.’ ” (Mic. 5.2 NKJV)   

He asked you for life, and you gave it to him –
   
length of days, for ever and ever. (Ps. 21.4)   

YAHWEH:
Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,’ declares the LORD. (Zech. 2.10)  

He is coming like the rain from heaven    

MESSIAH:
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
    righteous and victorious,
    gentle and riding on a donkey. (Zech. 9.9)      

YAHWEH:
‘As surely as the sun rises,
    he will appear;
he will come to us
like the winter rains,
    like the spring rains that water the earth
.’
(Hos. 6.3)      

MESSIAH:
May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth
. (Ps. 72.6)    

He will rise on earth like the sun

YAHWEH:
As surely as the sun rises,
  
he will appear . . . (Hos. 6.3)

MESSIAH:
But for you who revere my name,
the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. (Mal. 4.2)

He is coming the judge the earth in righteousness

YAHWEH:
But the LORD abides forever;
He has established His throne for judgment,
And He will judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity
.
(Ps. 9.7-8 NASB)    

He receives divine glory      

MESSIAH:
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but
with righteousness he will judge the needy,
    with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth
.   
(Isa. 11.3-4)   

YAHWEH:
   ‘How can I let myself be defamed?
   I will not yield my glory to another.’
   (Isa. 48.11)    

All nations will obey him

SON OF MAN:
‘In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power . . .’ (Dan 7.13-14)

YAHWEH:
All the ends of the earth
     will remember and turn to the  Lord ,
and all the families of the nations
     will bow down before him,
for
dominion belongs to the  Lord
     and he rules over the nations
.

(Ps. 22.27-28)  

All nations will worship him

MESSIAH:
The sceptre will not depart from Judah,
    nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
     
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
(Gen 49.10)

YAHWEH:
All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name. (Ps. 86.9)     

He is king over all the earth

SON OF MAN:
‘In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven . . . all nations and peoples of every language worshipped him.’ (Dan 7.13-14)    

YAHWEH:
For God is the
King of all the earth . . . (Ps. 47.7)


He is enthroned forever

MESSIAH:
Endow the king with your justice, O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness . . .
May he rule from sea to sea
    and
from the River to the ends of the earth.                                    
(Ps. 72.1,8)      

YAHWEH:
You, LORD, reign for ever;
    
your throne endures from generation to generation.
(Lam. 5.19)           

He is enthroned in Zion

MESSIAH:
You said, ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
 I have sworn to David my servant,
 “I will establish your line for ever
 and make
your throne firm through all generations.” ’
(Ps. 89.3-4)       

YAHWEH:
The LORD will rule over them in Mount Zion
    from that day and for ever.’          
(Mic. 4.7)

He has everlasting dominion         

MESSIAH:
The One enthroned in heaven laughs . . . saying,
I have installed my King
     on Zio
n, my holy mountain.’ (Ps. 2.4,6)     

YAHWEH:
Then I praised the Most High; I honoured and glorified him who lives for ever.

His dominion is an eternal dominion;
 his kingdom endures from generation to generation
.
(Daniel 4.34)

He will bring everlasting righteousness           

MESSIAH:
In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man . . . His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. (Dan. 7.13-14)    

YAHWEH:
But my righteousness will last for ever,
  my salvation through all generations.’

(Isa. 51.8)   

He will bring worldwide peace        

MESSIAH:
 “Seventy
weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place . . . until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks . . . (Dan. 9.24-25 NASB)    

YAHWEH:
He will judge between the nations
   and will settle disputes for many peoples
.
They will beat their swords into ploughshares
   and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
   nor will they train for war any more.
(Isa. 2.4)

He will inherit the nations

MESSIAH:
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
  His rule will extend from sea to sea
  and from the River
to the ends of the earth.
(Zech. 9.10)

YAHWEH:
Rise up, O God, judge the earth,
    for
all the nations are your inheritance. (Ps. 82.8)       

All nations will be blessed in him   

MESSIAH:
Ask me,
    and
I will make the nations your inheritance,
    the ends of the earth your possession. (Ps. 2.8)    

YAHWEH:
If you swear, ‘As the LORD lives,’
    in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then nations shall bless themselves in him,
    and in him shall they glory. (Jer. 4.2 ESV)     

MESSIAH:
May his name endure for ever,
    his fame continue as long as the sun!
May people be blessed in him,
  
 all nations call him blessed!   (Ps. 72.17 ESV)     

His enemies will bow before him

 

YAHWEH:
For dominion belongs to the  Lord ,
     and he rules over the nations
.
Yea,
to him shall all the proud of the earth bow down;
      before him shall bow
all who go down to the dust . . .
(Ps. 28-29 RSV)           

MESSIAH:
May
he rule from sea to sea
     and from the River to the ends of the earth
.
May
the desert tribes bow before him
     and
his enemies lick the dust.    (Ps 72.8-9)

Kings will bring him gifts

 

YAHWEH:
Summon your power, God;
    show us your strength, our God, as you have done before.
Because of your temple at Jerusalem
   
kings will bring you gifts. (Ps. 68.28-29)            

MESSIAH:
May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores
    bring tribute to him;
May the kings of Sheba and Seba
    present him with gift
s. (Ps. 72.10)    

All nations will come to his resting-place

YAHWEH:
Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty . . . (Zech. 14.16)  

‘Now arise,  Lord  God, and
come to your resting place,
       you and the ark of your might.’ (2 Chr. 6.41)     
         

MESSIAH:
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will rally to him, and his resting-place will be glorious.  (Isa. 11.10)   

He will be a lawgiver for the nations

YAHWEH:
The law will go out from Zion,
    
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations
    and will settle disputes for many peoples.
(Isa. 2.3-4)
           

MESSIAH:
I have put my Spirit upon him,
  
he will bring forth justice to the nations . . .
He will not fail or be discouraged
    till he has established justice in the earth;
  
and the coastlands wait for his law.  
(Isa. 42.1, 4 RSV)   
    

He loves righteousness but hates wickedness

YAHWEH:
The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. (Ps. 33.5)      

The LORD examines the righteous,
   but
the wicked, those who love violence,
    he hates with a passio
n.
(Ps. 11.5)            

MESSIAH:
You love righteousness and hate wickedness
;
   therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
   by anointing you with the oil of joy.
(Ps. 45.7)   

He will crush the head of the serpent

 

YAHWEH:
It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
  and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.
(Ps. 74.14)    




He will conquer Edom

MESSIAH:
“I will make you and the woman
   enemies to each other.
Your descendants and her descendants
   will be enemies.
One of her descendants will crush your head,
   and you will bite his heel.”
(Gen. 3.15 NCV)


YAHWEH:
Who is this coming from Edom,
   
from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?
Who is this, robed in splendour,
   striding forward in the greatness of his strength?
It is I, proclaiming victory,
   mighty to save
.’
(Isa. 63.1)    

MESSIAH:
A star will come out of Jacob;
   a sceptre will rise out of Israel . . .

Edom will be conquered;
  Seir, his enemy, will be conquered,
  but Israel will grow strong.
A ruler will come out of Jacob
  
and destroy the survivors of the city.’
(Num. 24.17-19)

He will slay the wicked with the breath of his mouth

YAHWEH:
‘He will not escape the darkness;
   a flame will wither his shoots,
   and
the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.’
  (Job 15.30)   

His robes are stained with blood

MESSIAH:
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
  
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
(Isa. 11.4)

YAHWEH:
I trampled them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;
their blood spattered my garments,
    and I stained all my clothing
.’   
(Isa. 63.3)   

MESSIAH:
‘The sceptre will not depart from Judah,
    nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come . . .
he will wash his garments in wine,
    his robes in the blood of grapes
.’  
(Gen. 49.10-11)     

The blood of the righteous is precious in his sight

YAHWEH:
Precious in the sight of the LORD
  is the death of his faithful servants
.
(Ps. 116.15)

His name will be great

MESSIAH:
He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
  for
precious is their blood in his sight.
(Ps. 72.14)
   

YAHWEH:
Do as you promised, so that your name will be great for ever.
(2 Sam. 7.25-26)

MESSIAH:
Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. (2 Sam. 7.9)    

His name will endure forever    

 

YAHWEH:
Your name, LORD, endures for ever,

    your renown, LORD, through all generations.   
(Ps. 135.13)    

He is blessed forever

MESSIAH:
Endow the king with your justice, O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness .....
May his name endure for ever;
    may it continue as long as the sun.
(Ps. 72.1,17)       

YAHWEH:
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
  who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be his glorious name for ever;
  may his glory fill the whole earth!
Amen and Amen!
(Ps. 72.18-19 RSV)

He is the breath of our nostrils

MESSIAH:
You are the most excellent of men
  and your lips have been anointed with grace,
  since
God has blessed you for ever.
(Ps. 45.2)       

YAHWEH:
‘. . . as long as I have life within me,
          
the breath of God is in my nostrils . . .’           
(Job 27.3)

He is peace

MESSIAH:
The breath of our nostrils, the LORD’s anointed,  
 Was captured in their pits,
 Of whom we had said,
Under his shadow
 We shall live among the nations.
(Lam. 4.20 NASB)

YAHWEH:
So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. (Judges 6.24)

He is light and salvation       

MESSIAH:
He will stand and shepherd his flock
    in the strength of the LORD . . .
And
he will be our peace . . .
(Mic. 5.4-5)  

YAHWEH:
The LORD is my light and my salvation
    whom shall I fear?
(Ps. 27.1)       

MESSIAH:
“I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be
My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
(Isa. 49.6 NKJV)    

He is banner of protection

 

YAHWEH:
Moses built an altar and called it The  LORD  is my Banner. (Exod. 17.15)     

MESSIAH:
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples . . . (Isa. 11.10)    

He cares for the poor and needy

 

YAHWEH:
The poor and needy search for water,
    but there is none;
    their tongues are parched with thirst.
But I the LORD will answer them;
    
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. ’
(Isa. 41.17)          

MESSIAH:
For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
    the afflicted who have no one to help.
He will take pity on the weak and the needy
    and save the needy from death.
(Ps. 72.12-13)        

He opens the eyes of the blind

 

YAHWEH:
‘Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come . . .’
Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
    and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
(Is. 35.4-5)            

MESSIAH:
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people
    and a light for the Gentiles,
    
to open eyes that are blind . . .
(Is. 42.6-7)     

The shepherd who tends his sheep . . .

 

YAHWEH:
‘"For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep . . . I myself will tend my sheep and make them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. (Ezek. 34.11-12.15)         

MESSIAH:
I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. (Ezek. 34.23)           

. . . and leads them to quiet waters

 

YAHWEH:
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters . . .
(Ps. 23.1-2)         

MESSIAH:
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people . . .
He who has compassion on them will guide them
    and
lead them beside springs of water.
(Isa. 49.8,10)    

Blessed are those who take refuge in him

YAHWEH:
Taste and see that the LORD is good;    
    
 blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.     
(Ps. 34.8)            

MESSIAH:
Kiss the Son, or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
    
Blessed are all who take refuge in him. (Ps. 2.12)
