JESUS:
‘All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.’ (Matt. 25.32)

He searches for the strays

YAHWEH:
‘“ I will search for the lost and bring back the strays.”’  (Ezek 34.16)

‘“I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.”’  (Ezek 34.12)

He carries the vulnerable

Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’ (Luke 19.9-10)

‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?’ (Luke 15.4)

YAHWEH:
He tends his flock like a shepherd:
    he gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart
;
    he gently leads those that have young.
(Isa. 40.11)

JESUS:
‘And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.”’ (Luke 15.5-6)

He brings them to safety

I will bring them together like sheep in a sheepfold,
    like a flock in its pasture;

    the place will throng with people.’ (Mic. 2.12)

I have other sheep that are not of this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.’ (John 10.16)

JESUS:

he leads me beside quiet waters . . . (Ps. 23.1-2)

The false shepherds abandon the flock

For the Lamb at the centre of the throne
   will be their shepherd
;
“he will lead them to springs of living water.” (Rev. 7.17)

YAHWEH:
‘“. . . because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock . . . I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.”’ (Ezek. 34.8-10)

JESUS:
‘The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.’ (John 10.11-13)
