Jesus and the Father in Scripture

He will come back again

 

YAHWEH:
Then I will return to my lair
   until they have borne their guilt
   and seek my face

in their misery
   they will earnestly seek me.’ (Hos. 5.15)

JESUS:
‘Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’ (Matt. 23.37–39)

There will be a longing for his return

 

YAHWEH:
The days are coming,’ declares the Sovereign LORD,
   when I will send . . . a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
People will stagger from sea to sea
   and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the LORD,
   but they will not find it.’
(Amos 8.11-12)  

JESUS:
Then he said to his disciples, ‘The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.’ (Luke 17.22)    

But his day is approaching

 

YAHWEH:
Blow the trumpet in Zion;
    sound the alarm on my holy hill.
Let all who live in the land tremble,
    for the day of the LORD is coming.    (Joel 2.1)

JESUS:
He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 1.8)   

His kingdom is coming

 

GOD THE FATHER:
And he said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.’ (Mark 9.1)      

JESUS:
‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’ (Matt. 16.28)   

He will appear in glory

 

YAHWEH:
For the LORD will rebuild Zion
    and appear in his glory. (Ps. 102.16)   

JESUS:
When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (Col. 3.4)  

He will call his children together

 

YAHWEH:
‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
   I will bring your children from the east
   and gather you from the west.

I will say to the north, “Give them up!”
   and to the south, “Do not hold them back.” ’ (Isa. 43.5-6)

JESUS:
‘Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven . . . And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.’ (Matt. 24.30-31)

We will be gathered to him

 

YAHWEH:
Gather to me this consecrated people,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.’ (Ps. 50.5)

JESUS:
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed . . . (2 Thess. 1-2)  

Jerusalem will find refuge under his wings

YAHWEH:
. . . the children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (Ps. 36.7  ESV)

I, the LORD All-Powerful, will protect Jerusalem like a mother bird circling over her nest.(Isa. 31.5  CEV)

JESUS:
Jerusalem, Jerusalem . . . how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings . . . (Matt. 23.37)

He will blaze like lightning across the sky

YAHWEH:
When the waters saw you, O God, they were afraid . . . lightning flashed in all directions.
The crash of your thunder rolled out,
   and flashes of lightning lit up the world . . . (Ps.77.16-18 GNB)

JESUS:
‘For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. ’ (Luke 17.24)   

Every eye will see him on the clouds

 

YAHWEH:
He makes the clouds his chariot
   and rides on the wings of the wind.
(Ps. 104.3)


. . . every eye will see
when the LORD returns to Zion. (Isa. 52.8 HCSB)

JESUS:
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him . . .
(Rev. 1.7 RSV)

He will come with his holy ones

 

YAHWEH:
Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. (Zech. 14.5)

JESUS:
May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. (1 Thess. 3.13)

His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives

YAHWEH:
On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem . . .
(Zech. 14.4)

JESUS:
‘This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’
Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives . . . (Acts 1.11–12)

He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood

 

YAHWEH:
‘I have trodden the winepress . . . in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.’ (Isa. 63.3)

JESUS:
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. . . . He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. (Rev. 19.13,15)

He will gather the nations for judgement

YAHWEH:
‘I will gather all nations
    and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat . . .
for there I will sit
    to judge all the nations
on every side.’
(Joel 3.2,12)    

JESUS:
‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him . . .’ (Matt. 25.31-2)    

He will gather them like wheat

YAHWEH:
But they do not know
   the thoughts of the LORD;
they do not understand his plan,
   that he has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing-floor. (Mic. 2.12)     

‘Circumcise yourselves to the LORD . . .
or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire
   because of the evil you have done –
   burn with no one to quench it. (Jer. 4.4)   

JESUS:
‘His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ (Luke 3.17)   

He will come with fire to punish the guilty

YAHWEH:
The LORD will come with fire . . . He will punish all the people of the world whom he finds guilty . . . (Isa. 66.15–16  GNB)

JESUS:
This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire . . . He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. (2 Thess. 1.7–8)

He will strike down the nations with a sword

YAHWEH:
‘ “I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty. . . . the LORD will bring charges against the nations . . . ” ’ (Jer. 25.29,31)   

JESUS:
‘Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matt. 10.34)   

Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. (Rev. 19.15)   

He will destroy the lawless one with the breath of his mouth

YAHWEH:
‘He will not escape the darkness;
    a flame will wither his shoots,
    and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.’
   (Job 15.30)    

JESUS:
And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendour of his coming. (2 Thess. 2.8)      

The dead will be raised

YAHWEH:
But your dead will live, Lord;
  their bodies will rise
. . .
(Isa. 26.19)

JESUS:
‘For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.’ (John 6.40)   

He will bring every hidden deed to judgement

YAHWEH:
For God will bring every deed into judgment,
    including every hidden thing
,
    whether it is good or evil. (Ecc. 12.14)   


JESUS:
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. (1 Cor. 4.5)     

All will appear before his judgement seat

YAHWEH:
For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat . . . So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. (Rom. 14.10,12)   

JESUS:
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due to him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Cor. 5.10)

His reward is with him

 

YAHWEH:
See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power,
    and he rules with a mighty arm.
See, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense accompanies him. (Isa. 40.10)     

‘You reward everyone according to what they have done.’ (Ps. 62.12)      

JESUS:
‘Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.’ (Rev. 22.12)           

He can blot out of the book of life

 

YAHWEH:
The LORD replied to Moses, ‘Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.’ (Exod. 32.33)

JESUS:
I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.’ (Rev. 3.5)    

The unrighteous will be shut out from his presence

YAHWEH:
‘Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.’ (Gen. 4.14)

JESUS:
They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people . . . (2 Thess. 1.9-10)
