He rescues from Egypt

 

YAHWEH:
‘In days to come when your son asks you, “What does this mean?” say to him, “With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” ’ (Exod. 13.14)

JESUS:
Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed those who did not believe. (Jude 5)

He rescues from death

 

YAHWEH:
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
     the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called to the  Lord ;
     I cried to my God for help . . .
He parted the heavens and came down;
     dark clouds were under his feet.
(Ps. 18.5-6,9)

JESUS:
    He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up!’ The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
     They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’
     (Luke 7.14-16)

He rescues from destruction

 

GOD THE FATHER:
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. (Col. 1.13)

He saves us from sinking

JESUS:
They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead - Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.   (1 Thess. 1.9-10)

YAHWEH:
When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’
     Your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. (Ps. 94.18)   

He redeems us from our iniquities

JESUS:
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.  ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’ (Matt. 14.29-31)   

YAHWEH:
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
      For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
 and with him is plenteous redemption.
     And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. (Ps. 130.7-8 RSV)

JESUS:
. . . the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity. (Titus  2.13-14 RSV)

He accepts us

 

GOD THE FATHER:
The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. (Rom. 14.3)

JESUS:
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. (Rom. 15.7)

He gives us a new name

 

YAHWEH:
. . . you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. (Isa. 62.2)

He gives us a new identity

JESUS:
To the one who is victorious . . . I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. (Rev. 2.17)

YAHWEH:
No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.’ (Gen. 17.5)


JESUS:
Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah . . . I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.’ (Matt. 16.17-18)

He prepares a place for us

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Heb 11.16)

JESUS:
‘My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?’ (John 14.2)

Hope in him

 

YAHWEH:
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (1 Tim. 6.17)   

JESUS:We remember before our God and Father . . . your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thess. 1.3)    

Believe in him

 

YAHWEH:
I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds. (Tit. 3.8 RSV)   

Know him

JESUS:
Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.’ (John 11.25-26)  

GOD THE FATHER:
But now that you know God—or, I should say, now that God knows you—how is it that you want to turn back to those weak and pitiful ruling spirits? (Gal. 4.9)  
 

JESUS:
I want to know Christ – yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death . . . (Phil. 3.10)

Trust him

 

YAHWEH:
In you, LORD,
 I put my trust
.                                  
(Ps. 25.1)

JESUS:
Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. (Acts 14.23)     

Receive from him with confidence

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. (1 John 3.21-22)       

JESUS:
I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. (1 John 5.13-15 RSV)       

Acknowledge him and he will acknowledge you

YAHWEH:
‘And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind . . . If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you for ever.’ (1 Chr. 28.9)            

JESUS:
Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.’ (Matt. 10.32-33)         

Taste and see that the Lord is good

 

YAHWEH:
Taste and see that the LORD is good;    
      blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.     
(Ps. 34.8)        

JESUS:
. . . now that you have tasted that the Lord is good . . . you come to him, the living Stone - rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him . . . (1 Pet. 2.3-4)

Look to him for salvation

 

YAHWEH:
Look to Me, and be saved,
All you ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other.
         
(Isa. 45.22  NKJV)

JESUS:
‘For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.’ (John  6.40)  

We are his witnesses

 

YAHWEH:
You are my witnesses,’ declares the LORD,
    ‘and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
    and understand that I am he.’ (Isa. 43.10)    

JESUS:
‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;  and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ (Acts 1.8)   

We are his servants

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ . . . (Tit. 1.1)      

JESUS:
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God . . . (Rom. 1.1)
