Jesus and the Father in Scripture

Everything in heaven and earth belongs to him

YAHWEH:
‘Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power
    and the glory and the majesty and the splendour,
    for everything in heaven and earth is yours.’ (1 Chr. 29.11)

JESUS:
Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’ (Matt. 28.18)

All things exist through him and for him

 

GOD THE FATHER:
For from him and through him and for him are all things. (Rom. 11.36)

JESUS:
The Son is the image of the invisible God ... All things have been created through him and for him. (Col. 1.15-16)

The heavens are the work of his hands

 

YAHWEH:
‘Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days;
   your years go on through all generations.
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
   and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain;
   they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
   And they will be discarded.
But you remain the same,
    and your years will never end.

(Ps. 102.25–27).

JESUS:
But about the Son he says . . .

In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
    and your years will never end
.’
(Heb. 1.8,10–12).

He sustains all things

 

YAHWEH:
You are the LORD, you alone.  You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them . . . (Neh. 9.6 ESV)

JESUS:
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. (Heb. 1.3)

He connects all things

 

GOD THE FATHER:  
‘The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth . . .
For in him we live and move and have our being.
(Acts 17.24,28)

JESUS:
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Col. 1.17)

He contains all things

 

GOD THE FATHER:
When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.
(1 Cor. 15.28)

JESUS:
Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
(Col. 3.11)

He fills all things

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Do not I fill heaven and earth?’
    declares the LORD.  
(Jer. 23.24)

JESUS:
He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe. (Eph. 4.10)    

He sees all things

 

YAHWEH:
"These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth." (Zech. 4.10 RSV)  

JESUS:
The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. (Rev. 5.6)

He knows all things

 

GOD THE FATHER:
. . . we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. (1 John 3.20)   

JESUS:
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ (John 21.17)

He never changes

 

YAHWEH:
‘I the LORD do not change.’ (Mal. 3.6)

JESUS:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. (Heb. 13.8)

He is rich in wisdom and knowledge

GOD THE FATHER:
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!     (Rom. 11.33)

JESUS:
Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col. 2.2–3)

He is full of grace and truth

 

YAHWEH:
Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth." . . (Exod. 34.6 NASB)

JESUS:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us ..... full of grace and truth.
(John 1:14)

He is uncontaminated by sin

YAHWEH:
‘The LORD is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.’
(Ps. 92.15)

JESUS:
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. (1 John 3.5)

He is an incomparable teacher

YAHWEH:
‘God is exalted in his power.
    Who is a teacher like him?
’ (Job 36.22)

JESUS:
The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. (Mark 1.22)

No one ever spoke the way this man does,’ the guards replied.
(John 7.46)

His words last for ever

 

YAHWEH:
The grass withers and the flowers fall,
    but the word of our God stands for ever.
(Isa. 40.8)

JESUS:
‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.’ (Mark 13:31)

Who is like him?

 

YAHWEH:
Who is like you, LORD God Almighty?
    You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
You rule over the surging sea;
    when its waves mount up, you still them. (Ps. 89.8-9)       

JESUS:
 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm . . .
        [The disciples] were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey him!’ (Mark 4.39-41)   

There is no other LORD

YAHWEH:
For this is what the LORD says . . .
I am the LORD,
    and there is no other
.
(Isa. 45.18)

MESSIAH:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the  Lord ,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch . . .
And this is His name by which He will be called,
The  Lord  our righteousness.’ ” (Jer. 23
.5-6 NASB)

There is no other God

 

YAHWEH:
“See now that I alone am He;
    there is no God but Me.” (De
ut. 32.39 HCSB)

JESUS:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1.1)

There is no other Creator

 

YAHWEH:
I, the LORD, am the maker of all things,
Stretching out the heavens by Myself,
And spreading out the earth all alone . . .

(Isa. 44.24 NASB)

WISDOM OF GOD:
I was there when he established the heavens,
       when he drew the horizon on the oceans.
I was there when he set the clouds above,
      when he established springs deep in the earth.
I was there when he set the limits of the seas,
      so they would not spread beyond their boundaries.
And when he marked off the earth’s foundations,
I was the architect at his side.
I was his constant delight,
      rejoicing always in his presence.
 (Prov. 8.27–30 NLT)

There is no other Saviour

 

YAHWEH:
‘I, even I, am the LORD; and apart from me there is no saviour.’ (Isa. 43.11)

JESUS:
‘Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke 2.11)

There is no other Rock

 

YAHWEH:
‘Is there any God besides me?
     No, there is no other Rock;  I know not one.
(Isa. 44.8)

JESUS:
. . . for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10.4)

There is none other equal

 

YAHWEH:
With whom will you compare me or count me equal?
     To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
(Isa. 46.5)

JESUS:
For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (John 5.17-18)

There is none other righteous

 

YAHWEH:
Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me,
   are righteousness and strength . . .”
(Isa. 45.24 RSV)

JESUS:
You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. (Acts 3.13-14)

There is none other holy

 

GOD THE FATHER:
‘Great and marvellous are your deeds,
      Lord God Almighty.
 Just and true are your ways,
      King of the nations.
 Who will not fear you, Lord,
      and bring glory to your name?
For you alone are holy.
(Rev. 15.3-4)

JESUS:
Such a high priest truly meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. (Heb. 7.26)

No other name is exalted

 

YAHWEH:
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
      for his name alone is exalted. (Ps. 148.13)

JESUS:
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
     and gave him the name that is above every name . . . (Phil. 2.9)

No one else can share his glory

 

YAHWEH:
For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this.
      How can I let myself be defamed?
      I will not yield my glory to another.
(Isa. 48.11)

JESUS:
And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. (John 17.5)
