Jesus and the Father in Scripture

Call on his name

 

YAHWEH:
At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD. (Gen. 4.26)  

JESUS:
. . . those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ -
their Lord and ours. (1 Cor. 1.2)  

Call on him for salvation

 

YAHWEH:
‘And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.
(Joel 2.32)

Victory in his name

JESUS:
. . . if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved . . . for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
(Rom. 10.9,13)

YAHWEH:
Through you we push back our enemies;
    through your name we trample our foes.
(Ps. 44.4-5)

Salvation in his name

JESUS:
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’
Jesus replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.’ (Luke 10.17-19)  

YAHWEH:
Save me, O God, by your name;
    vindicate me by your might.
(Ps. 54.1)   

JESUS:
‘Salvation is found in no-one else; for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.’ (Acts 4.12)      

Trust in his name

 

YAHWEH:
We wait in hope for the LORD;
    he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
    for we trust in his holy name.       
(Ps. 33.20-21)  

JESUS:
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5.13)       

His name is magnified

 

YAHWEH:
And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel.’.” (2 Sam. 7.26 ESV)

JESUS:
And fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (Acts 19.17 NKJV)   

His name is glorified

 

YAHWEH:
I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;
    I will glorify your name for ever.      
(Ps. 86.12)  

JESUS:
We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you . . . (2 Thess. 1.12)  

I reject those who prophesy falsely in my name

YAHWEH:
‘I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, "I had a dream! I had a dream!" . . .  Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your ancestors.’ (Jer. 23.25,39)

JESUS:
‘Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name . . .?" Then I will tell them plainly, "I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!"’ (Matt. 7.22–23).

You will be hated for my names’ sake

 

YAHWEH:
Your brothers . . . hate you, and cast you out for my name’s sake . . . but it is they who shall be put to shame. The sound of an uproar from the city! A sound from the temple! The sound of the Lord rendering recompense to his enemies! (Isa. 66.5–6 ESV)

JESUS:
‘You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers . . . you will be hated by all for my name’s sake . . . But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near . . . for these are days of vengeance, to fulfil all that is written (Luke 21.16–17,20,22 RSV)

My name will be proclaimed in the nations

YAHWEH:
I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.
(Exod. 9.16)

JESUS:
‘This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel’ (Acts 9.15).

To him be glory

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever.  Amen. (1 Tim. 1.17)   

JESUS:
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever! Amen. (2 Pet. 3.18)   

To him be power

 

GOD THE FATHER:
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have   suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Pet. 5.10-11)           

JESUS:
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father -  to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. (Rev. 1.5-6)

Regard him as holy

 

YAHWEH:
‘Do not call conspiracy
    everything that these people call conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,
    and do not dread it.
The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy.’  
(Isa. 8.12-13)              

JESUS:
Have no fear of them, nor be troubled but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy. (1 Pet. 3.14-15 ESV)     

Worthy of glory and honour

 

GOD THE FATHER:
‘You are worthy, our Lord and God,
 to receive glory and honour and power . . .’
(Rev. 4.11)        

JESUS:
‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!’ (Rev 5.12)

Worshipped by men

 

GOD THE FATHER:
I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel ..... But he said to me, ‘Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!’ (Rev. 22.8-9)

JESUS:
Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’ (Matt. 14:33)     

Worshipped by angels

 

GOD THE FATHER:
All the angels were standing round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshipped God . . .  (Rev. 7.11)       

JESUS:
And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

 ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’ (Heb. 1.6)

Worshipped by children

 

YAHWEH:
Out of the mouths of children and infants
      you have perfected praise

 because of your enemies,
      to put down the enemy and the avenger.
(Ps. 8.2 Septuagint)


JESUS:
But when the chief priests and teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David,’ they were indignant.
 ‘Do you hear what these children are saying?’ they asked him.
  ‘Yes,’ replied Jesus, ‘have you never read,

  
‘“From the lips of children and infants
      you, Lord, have called forth your praise
?  (Matt  21: 15-16)

Addressed in prayer

 

GOD THE FATHER:
Into your hands I commit my spirit,
    Deliver me, LORD, my faithful God. (Ps. 31.5)

Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ (Luke 23.46)

JESUS:
While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ (Acts 7.59)        

Answers prayer

 

GOD THE FATHER:
‘. . . whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.’ (John 15.16)

JESUS:
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’ (John 14.14)  

Every knee will bow before him

 

YAHWEH:
I am God, and there is no other . . .
    before me every knee will bow;
(Isa. 45.22-23)

JESUS:
