Jesus' Impact on History

Famous People Speak on Jesus

Judged by any standards, Jesus' impact on history and on the lives of individuals from the highest to the lowest echeloins of society has been truly remarkable. Noted church historian Philikp Schaff once wrote that:

This Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science ... he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of schools, he spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.

Irish historian William Lecky commented that:

[Jesus] has exercised so deep an influence that it may be truly said that the simple record of three short years of active life has done more to regenerate and soften mankind than all the disquisitions of philosophers and all the exhortations of moralists. This has indeed been the wellspring of whatever is best and purest in the Christian life.

The novelist and historian H.G. Wells, not himself a believer, expressed similar thoughts:

I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very centre of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.

Below you will find a series of links to what numerous influential people have said about Jesus throughout the centuries. Some are surprising, some undoubtably moving, but all bear an enduring testimony to the influence of an obscure carpenter from Nazareth whose life altered the history of the world and continues to transform lives in every continent.
