GOD THE FATHER:
‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’  (Rev. 1.8)

JESUS:
‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, .....I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches.’ (Rev. 22.13,16)

YAHWEH:
‘This is what the LORD says..... I am the first and I am the last...’
(Isa. 44.6)

JESUS:
‘These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.’ (Rev. 2.8)

YAHWEH:
‘Hear O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord. ’ (Deut. 6.4 RSV)

Lord of Lords

JESUS:
there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.’ (1 Cor. 8.6)

YAHWEH:
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords. (Deut. 10.17)

King of Kings and Lord of Lords

JESUS:
‘They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings.’ (Rev. 17.14)

YAHWEH:
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords
(1 Tim. 6.15)

JESUS:
On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.  (Rev. 19.16)

Lord of all

GOD THE FATHER:
‘The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth . . .’ (Acts 17.24)

Lord of the Living and the Dead  

JESUS:
‘You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.’
(Acts 10.36)

GOD THE FATHER:
‘. . . have you not read what God said to you, "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?" He is not the God of the dead but of the living.’ (Matt. 22.31-32)       

JESUS:
For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. (Rom. 14.9)

Lord of the Sabbath

YAHWEH:
‘Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God.’ (Exod. 20.8-10)         

JESUS:
Then he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’ (Mark 2.27-28)

Lord of glory

YAHWEH:
Who is he, this King of glory?
    The LORD Almighty -
    he is the King of glory.     
(Ps. 24.10)  

JESUS:
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had,
they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Cor. 2.8)

GOD THE FATHER:
They called out in a loud voice, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?’ (Rev. 6.10)     

King of Israel

JESUS:
They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a licence for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. (Jude 4)

These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David . . .‘I am coming soon.’ (Rev. 3.7,11)

YAHWEH:
The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you;
   never again will you fear any harm.
(Zeph. 3.15)

JESUS:
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting . . .
‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’(John 12.13)

Holy One

YAHWEH:
This is what the LORD says -
 your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.....  
(Isa. 43.14)    

JESUS:
‘We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.’ (John 6.69)

Tested in the Wilderness

YAHWEH:
But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?’ . . . Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.
(Num. 21.4–6)

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and grieved him in the wasteland!
Again and again they put God to the test;
    they vexed the Holy One of Israel. (Ps. 78.40–41)

JESUS:
We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents; nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. (1 Cor. 10.9–10 ESV)

Giving the law

YAHWEH:
When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God. (Exod. 31.18)

Revealed in glory  

JESUS:
‘You have heard that it was said . . . but I say to you . . . ’ (Matt. 7.21-22)

. . . Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, ‘Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.’ (John 8.6-7)

YAHWEH:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
    the whole earth is full of his glory.’ (Isa. 6.3)

JESUS:
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him. (John 12.41)

Enthroned in glory

YAHWEH:
‘I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing round him on his right and on his left.’ (1 Kings 22.19)

JESUS:
‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne . . . He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.’ (Matt 25.31-33)     

Appearing in Majesty

YAHWEH:
. . . I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory. (Ezek. 43.1-2)

  ‘As I looked,
  thrones were set in place,
       and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
  His clothing was as white as snow;
       the hair of his head was white like wool.
 His throne was flaming with fire
       and its wheels were all ablaze.’     
(Dan. 7.9)

JESUS:
And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash round his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. (Rev. 1.12-15)        

Supreme over angels

YAHWEH:
Praise the LORD, you his angels,
    you mighty ones who do his bidding,
    who obey his word. (Ps. 103.20)

JESUS:
‘The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.’ (Matt. 13.41)    

Supreme over the church

GOD THE FATHER:
If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice - nor do the churches of God. (1 Cor. 11.16)  

JESUS:
All the churches of Christ send greetings. (Rom. 16.16)

Supreme over the gospel

GOD THE FATHER:
Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship;  we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you. (1 Thess. 2.9)     

JESUS:
So from Jerusalem all the way round to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. (Rom. 15.19)

YAHWEH:
‘I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me.’
(Isa. 46.9)

JESUS:
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. (John 1.18 ESV)

YAHWEH:
‘. . . our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes . . . ’ (Neh. 9.32)

JESUS:
. . . while we wait for the blessed hope – the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ . . . (Tit. 2.13)

YAHWEH:
A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob
    will return to the Mighty God. (Isa. 10.21)


The true God

MESSIAH:
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa. 9.6)

GOD THE FATHER:
‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.’ (John 17.3)

JESUS:
And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. (1 John 5.20)

YAHWEH:
‘ “ For I am with you,” declares the LORD Almighty.’  (Hag. 2.4)

JESUS:
‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’). (Matt. 1.23)

GOD THE FATHER:
. . . one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph. 4.6)

JESUS:
Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, for ever praised! Amen.
(Rom. 9.6)

YAHWEH:
    And there is no God apart from me,
a righteous God and a Saviour;
    there is none but me. (Isa. 45.21)

JESUS:
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours . . . (2 Pet. 1.1)

GOD THE FATHER:
“And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
(Rev. 22.6 RSV)

JESUS:
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. (1 Pet. 1.10-11)  

YAHWEH:
You, LORD, reign for ever;
    your throne endures from generation to generation.
(Lam. 5.19)

JESUS:
But about the Son he says,
‘Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever . . .
(Heb. 1.8)

My Lord and My God

YAHWEH:
Even the sparrow has found a home . . .
a place near your altar,
  LORD Almighty, my King and my God.
(Ps. 84.3)

JESUS:
Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ (John 20.28)
