This website, designed in particular as a companion and supplementary resource for the book But is he God?, published by Paternoster, is devoted to the greatest figure who has ever lived, Jesus of Nazareth. Although many inspiring men and women have shaped the world around us, Jesus towers above them all, striding over history like a colossus and defying every attempt to fit him into neat categories. The Canadian-
Nineteen wide centuries have come and gone and today he is the centrepiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that ever were built, and all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.
But could there be more to him even than this? The book is an attempt to explore the enigma around Jesus’ ultimate identity, and in particular whether it is right to describe him as ‘God’, as countless Christians across a whole spectrum of Christian traditions have done over the centuries. Many of the scriptural comparisons referred to there are laid out in full here so that the reader can see directly the links between Yahweh, the God of Israel, in the Old Testament and Jesus in the New. There is also a more detailed examination here of those New Testament verses that seem to describe Jesus as ‘God’, alongside much other relevant evidence.
It is my hope and prayer that this website can be a tiny help towards a fuller picture of this most challenging and yet enigmatic figure who asks simply that we come to him with a child-
‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.’ (Rev. 3.20 RSV)
